Cat Lady Spends a Monthly Salary on Silver Box for Cat’s Ashes

Losing a pet is one of the most difficult experiences a person can go through. Cats, in particular, can form close bonds with their owners, and their absence can be deeply felt.

After my beloved childhood Ragdoll cat, Rags, passed away, I made a silver box for his ashes in a metalsmithing class at the time.

Benefits of Using a Silver Box for Cat’s Ashes

Silver is a beautiful and durable metal that has been used for centuries to create jewelry, tableware, and other decorative items. For me, it’s become a popular choice for a pet cremation urn, as it is both dignified and respectful.

There are many benefits to using a silver box for cat’s ashes. Here are just a few:

Durability: Silver is a very durable metal, so it can withstand the test of time. This means you can be sure your cat’s ashes will be safe and protected in a silver box.

Beauty: Silver is a beautiful and elegant metal that will add a touch of sophistication to any home.

Versatility: Silver boxes for cat’s ashes can be displayed in various ways. You can place them on a shelf, mantel, or coffee table or hang them on the wall.

Personalization: Making your own silver box for a cat’s ashes can be personalized with your cat’s name, birth and death dates, or a silver paw on the top or at the bottom of the box.

How to Make a Silver Box for Cat’s Ashes

When my parents’ Ragdoll cat, Caymus, passed, I wanted to do the same. Caymus, although he lived with my parents, always felt like my cat. So when he passed, I asked my mom if I could have his ashes. One day, I want all my cats’ ashes mixed with mine and then scattered in the Carribean Sea. Until then, I want them on my fireplace mantel.

I reconnected with my metalsmithing professor, Sydney Pener, from 2009 to create this box for Caymus. This video took over two years to make. I hope you enjoy it, and thank you for watching.

How Much Does It Cost?

Well, it depends on the situation. If you can make the box yourself, then you don’t have to hire a metalsmith professor or a silversmith to do it for you. If you cannot, then you will need to consider taking a silversmithing class or similar to help find someone to build it with you.

Additionally, of course, there is the cost of the metal, the sandpaper, and any other tools and materials needed to create the box.

I haven’t truly added up what this last one cost me – but it’s well over $800. However, it’s worth every penny that was spent over the two years because I will have it forever, and it also gave me great peace in its creation.

A silver box for a cat’s ashes is a beautiful and dignified way to honor your beloved pet. It is a durable and versatile option that can be displayed in a variety of ways.
