After my beloved childhood Ragdoll cat, Rags, passed away, I made a silver box for his ashes in a metalsmithing class at the time.

How to Make a Silver Box for Cat’s Ashes
When my parents’ Ragdoll cat, Caymus, passed, I wanted to do the same. Caymus, although he lived with my parents, always felt like my cat. So when he passed, I asked my mom if I could have his ashes. One day, I want all my cats’ ashes mixed with mine and then scattered in the Carribean Sea. Until then, I want them on my fireplace mantel.
I reconnected with my metalsmithing professor, Sydney Pener, from 2009 to create this box for Caymus. This video took over two years to make. I hope you enjoy it, and thank you for watching.
How Much Does It Cost?
Well, it depends on the situation. If you can make the box yourself, then you don’t have to hire a metalsmith professor or a silversmith to do it for you. If you cannot, then you will need to consider taking a silversmithing class or similar to help find someone to build it with you.
Additionally, of course, there is the cost of the metal, the sandpaper, and any other tools and materials needed to create the box.
I haven’t truly added up what this last one cost me – but it’s well over $800. However, it’s worth every penny that was spent over the two years because I will have it forever, and it also gave me great peace in its creation.
A silver box for a cat’s ashes is a beautiful and dignified way to honor your beloved pet. It is a durable and versatile option that can be displayed in a variety of ways.
